The National Red Meat Producers’ Organisation of South Africa (RPO) congratulates the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries for their speedy and effective actions regarding the meat scandal in Brazil.
The RPO considers the Department and more specifically the Directorate: Veterinary Services as an important partner of the RPO in ensuring safe meat and meat products to the South African consumer. It is pleasing that the veterinary authorities of both countries are working well together and they obviously also communicate effectively with each other. It is further pleasing that despite the cessation of meat imports from certain meat processors in Brazil, the Department has instructed all meat imports from Brazil to be tested at the port of entry.
The RPO makes use of Agri Inspec on a continuing basis to continuously investigate the imports landscape and to be on the lookout for irregularities. Agri Inspec is a private company and acts supportively to the South African government.
The RPO strives to ensure that safe red meat is made available to the consumer.
South Africa does not import any sheep meat or beef from Brazil for some time now. The RPO also appeals to the consumer to buy South African sheep meat and beef as it is a guarantee of healthy red meat. The South African classification system also ensures a guarantee for hygiene standards.
